Decluttering 101: The Bedroom

There are many benefits to getting rid of clutter in your home. Decluttering can make your home appear larger and more inviting. It is also much easier to kick back and relax in a neat and orderly home.

The thought of decluttering an entire house can be somewhat overwhelming, though, so why not take it room-by-room instead? You begin and end each day in the bedroom, so that’s as good a place as any to start.

With these simple tips, decluttering your sleeping sanctuary is a breeze!

Discard Unwanted Items

Bedrooms often become a default storage for a few reasons, the most notable being your closets! Even if your home doesn’t have a lot of storage space, the bedrooms are guaranteed to have closet space ripe for filling with items that you may not necessarily need, but don’t want to let go of “just yet.”

Bedrooms also have the benefit of being a “private” space where many people prefer to store personal or sentimental items. It’s also a place where you can let the clutter grow and go untouched without worrying about company seeing the mess.

Sort through everything in your bedroom to determine if there’s anything you need to discard. Bigger items such as clothing that no longer fits or outdated VCRs can be donated to local non-profit organizations. However, smaller items such as pens that have dried out or scraps of paper you no longer need can simply be discarded at home. Do this exercise even if you think there’s nothing to get rid of in your room. It’s very likely that you will be surprised to see how many unwanted items are contributing to the clutter problem in your bedroom.

Clear the Nightstands

Nightstands are often cluttered with items that people use before bed and first thing in the morning. However, it’s best to minimize thenumber of items you store on your nightstands. It’s perfectly fine to keep items such as a clock and lamp, or one or two (at most!) books or pictures on the nightstand, but everything else should be removed.

Items such as a pile of unread mail or a pair of broken glasses are contributing to the clutter problem in your bedroom and should be removed. After clearing off the nightstand, move onto the other surfaces in your bedroom, such as the top of the dresser or TV stand.

Dig Deep Into Drawers

Decluttering does not mean hiding clutter inside drawers and closets—it means getting rid of clutter once and for all. For this reason, it’s important to dig deep by sorting through items in your drawers and other hidden spaces within your bedroom. Decluttering these areas not only makes the room more organized, it will also make it easier for you to find what you’re looking for in the future.

Fold and Hang Clothes

Clothes belong in the closet or dresser drawers, but they often end up thrown over chairs, on the bed, or crumpled up on the floor. If there are clothing items scattered around your room, now is the time to put them away.

The first step is determining which clothing items are clean and which items need to be washed. Once everything has been cleaned, start folding or hanging your clothes to declutter your room. Storing the clothes properly will make them last longer and make it much easier to get dressed in the morning. Putting away clothes can also clear a great deal of space so you have more room to relax.

Last But Not Least… Make the Bed!

Your sheets and pillows aren’t actually “clutter,” but the bed is the centerpiece of your bedroom: a messy bed makes the entire room look messy, no matter how much work you’ve done to tidy up. It only takes a few minutes, but it can make a world of difference.

Congratulations! If you’ve made it through these five steps, you’ve successfully decluttered your bedroom. It may only be one room in your house, but having an organized bedroom can completely change your attitude at home. Enjoy the fruits of your labor by kicking back and relaxing in your decluttered bedroom!
